A late Early-Medieval (Anglo Saxon) penny of Edward the Martyr (AD 975-8); 'small cross' type (North 763); moneyer: Seaxbeorht (Sehxbyryht); mint: Lewes. Ref: North 1994: 157-8. The coin shows slightly odd wear patterns with the bust on the obverse and a small patch of the inscription very worn in comparison to the rest of the coin, with the wear in the inscription mirrored with similar wear on the reverse.

Eary Medieval silver coin: penny of Edward the Martyr, minted by Leofric at Ipswich. North 763 / Spink 1142. This coin has also been recorded as EMC 2011.0092. Dr Martin Allen has commented that "the coin is from the same dies as J.C. Sadler, The Ipswich Mint c.973-c.1210 A.D. Volume I. Eadgar to Aethelred II c.973-c.1016 A.D. (2010), p. 30, Fig. 13, and from the same obverse die as a coin of Wilebeart (Sadler, p. 31, Fig. 14). Sadler records only four coins of Ipswich in the reign of Edward the Martyr (two of Leofric and two of Wilebeart), but a coin of a third moneyer, Waetferth, ha…
