Silver coin. Possibly a worn penny of William I (1066-1087), pierced with a round hole of diameter 1.5mm close to its edge (see Spink 2017 page 149, nos 1250-1255 as examples); creased. The reverse, which is better preserved, appears to include two loops at the end of strands of a cross or flower motif bounded by the outer circle. John Naylor kindly comments: 'I'm not entirely convinced that this is a Norman coin, the reverse doesn't quite fit any of the types and each 'arm' is linked by a plain band forming a plain circle inside a beaded circle (if that makes sense!). I wonder if it…

A modern imitation of a medieval silver penny of William I (1066-1089), Pax type (North 858-50). The reverse inscription reads STAMFORD CASTLE rather than giiving a mint and moneyer and the weight is too high for an official, medieval issue. It can probably be considered a tourist/re-enactment piece of the late 20th-early 21st century
