A complete early Medieval Norman silver penny of Stephen (AD 1135-1154). 'Watford Type', c. 1136-1145. Obverse depicts crowned bust facing right holding sceptre left; obverse legend reads: STIEFN(E) R[EX]. Reverse depicts long cross pattee with fleur in each quadrant and all inside quattrefoil; reverse legend: [G]ODPINE.ON.[...]. Slightly double-struck on reverse. There is a Godwine at Chichester, Lincoln, Norwich, however no Godpine is listed as moneyer for this type. It is possible, therefore, that this is a misspelling of the name Godwine or less likely that this is a new money…

An extremely worn and flattened silver penny, probably of Stephen (1135-1154 AD). Coin Type BMC vii; Awbridge (c. 1154-1158 AD). The obverse depicts a crowned and diademed bearded bust facing three-quarters left, holding sceptre in right hand; obverse legend reads: [STI]EFN[E] (R?). The reverse seems to depict a cross voided within a beaded quatrefoil; in each angle, a fleur springing from the quatrefoil. The reverse legend is nearly missing, but 'ARN' is clearly visible partway through, suggesting that the moneyer may have been Arnwi, listed as a moneyer from Lincoln; this informatio…

A silver penny of Stephen AD 1135-1154. This is a substantive type (c. 1135-1141). Due to the fact that there is no inner circle on the obverse, this coin could only have been minted in either: Bedford, Canterbury, Carlisle, Lincoln, London, Norwich, Oxford, Southwark or Warwick. The coin had been bent in half which has left a cracked fold line down the centre of the coin, the coin has been straighten out by the finder.
