An incomplete medieval silver penny probably of Edward IV, second reign (AD1471-1483) dating to c.AD1480-1483. Mint of York, struck under the authority of Archbishop Thomas Rotherham. The inscription has been almost entirely clipped away and the identification is based on the mint, the marks by the breast - a T to the left and a badly struck key to the right - and the quatrefoil at the centre of the reverse. The initial mark is indiscernible, but for this coin would be a rose. North (1991), p94, no.1654.

Obverse depicts a crowned bust facing probably with a T to the left of the neck, the right of the neck is indiscernible. CIVITAS EBORACI reverse depicting a long cross with three pellets in each quarter plus an extra pellet in two opposing quarters and a quatrefoil in the centre of the cross.. Initial mark is a rose. Mint of York. Probably, North (1991) vol 2, p 94, no N1654-1656.

There is a small hole in the coin, on the top left of the crown, but the irregular shape and placement does not indicate this was a purposeful piercing to alter the use of the coin.

The coin measures 15mm in diameter. The reverse has been double struck. The coin has been pierced through the obverse between the centre and the inner circle at about 11 o'clock, corresponding to about 8 o'clock on the reverse, possibly for conversion into an item of jewellery.

Possible B on breast suggests Bristol mint (indicating North 1635), however reverse inscription reads CIVI/TAS/CAN/TOB implying a Canterbury mint. The lettering on the reverse including the B of CAN/TOB and the poor definition of the S suggests a possible contemporary copy.
