Mintmark rose (33). Obverse inscription: *EDW[---]A Reverse description: Long cross, either three pellets or trefoil in each angle, inscription in two orders, the outermost is partially lost. Mintmark/initial: Rose (33). Reverse inscription: outer order: *POSVI/[---]; inner order: CIVI/[---]CAN/TOR. Diameter: 18.8mm, Weight: 1.14gms, die axis: probably 6.

A Medieval silver coin; probably a halfpenny of Edward IV, 2nd Reign (1471 - 1483), Durham mint but unlike the published examples. The coin is the right size for a half penny, but has the reverse legend of a penny, and has the additional feature of a V on the reverse in the CIVI quarter. The portrait is most similar to Withers type 4 (minted under Bishop Dudley), but the V to the left of the neck is not at all visible. The initial mark appears to be circular, probably a rose. There may be a pellet on the breast. There is a D at the centre of the reverse. Compare North number 1665 and …

Type XXIiv North 1654. A portion of the legend is missing, making the coin oval. There is a slight bend in the extant legend. It measures 15.90 mm DIA x 0.64 mm TH and weighs 0.60 g. A similar coin can be seen in the database CPAT-11D675
