An Early Medieval silver penny probably of Aethelred II, dating to c. 990 AD. Only the central area of the coin remains, and close examination reveals that this is most likely due to it being deliberately cut. Portrait left with sceptre to the obverse, reverse with cross and CRVX in the quadrants. type BMC iii a, North 770 - A new design retains the explicit emphasis on divine presence, with the letters C-R-U-X surrounding a cross.

A silver fragment of a Saxon cut halfpenny, one edge of which has been cut, the other edge has been fractured. The coin may be of Aethelred II (AD 978-1016), a variety of the last small cross type (AD 1009-1017) with a pellet on the reverse (see North 1994:160). North Type 778 notes that the bust reaches the edge of the coin, as it does on this example, while Type 780/1 (also London mint) notes that pellets can be found on the reverse of these coins (ibid.). The partial legend on the obverse suggests that the moneyer is someone like Leofwine or Leofwig, both of whom also struck at the…

Approximately two-fifths of an Anglo-Saxon silver penny of Aethelred II, 'The Unready' (AD 978-1016). Crux type issued AD 991-997 (N 770). The moneyer is Godinc, who struck in Lincoln and Oxford, the latter most likely here not only owing to proximity to the mint. Godinc is listed by EMC as moneyer at Oxford for N 770, but not at Lincoln. The coin appears broken rather than having been purposefully halved, although it is possible that it became damaged after it was halved. This is the first CRUX type recorded by PAS from Oxfordshire.

CURATOR'S REPORT ?3 Fused pennies of Aethelred II (978-1016). Possible mistruck coin. Description of find Because the three coins are exactly aligned, all that is visible is one side of each of the two outer coins, with nothing visible of the middle coin apart from the edge. Both of the outer coins show the obverse of the Second Hand type of Ethelred II, (978-1016), issued in the 980s (precise dates are uncertain). The third coin is likely to be of the same type, although it could plausibly be another issue from just before or after the Second Hand type. With only the obverses v…
