An Early Medieval silver penny probably of Aethelred II, dating to c. 990 AD. Only the central area of the coin remains, and close examination reveals that this is most likely due to it being deliberately cut. Portrait left with sceptre to the obverse, reverse with cross and CRVX in the quadrants. type BMC iii a, North 770 - A new design retains the explicit emphasis on divine presence, with the letters C-R-U-X surrounding a cross.
