There is a 9.09mm long transverse tear in the centre of the coin from around 2 o'clock to 9 o'clock.
Obverse description: Bust facing crowned and diademed; to left, a sceptre pattée; to right, a sceptre bottonnée.
Obverse inscription: PILLELM REX ANGLI.
Reverse description: Cross fleury with an annulet in centre, over cross saltire bottonnée.
Reverse inscription: PICINC ON [ ]E (probably)
The reading of the mint and moneyer is difficult. The moneyer appears to read PICINC, listed as a moneyer at Worcester for William I's 'Profile' type (BMC type i, N839-41) and 'Bonnet' type (BMC type ii; N842) but not the 'Two Sceptres' (Allen 2012, 82). The mint name on the coin is as good as illegible, ending E. If the reading of the moneyer's name is correct it would be the first of this moneyer for the type recorded. 29291072107414WAW2023-05-03T11:16:49Z2023-07-20T10:17:38Z1.15PAS64523491001AC118.880.62122142141426299333113292WorcestershireMalvern HillsGrimleySO816152.2468487-2.27970916bands.shops.handy10WAW-235AB619724751912Bust facing crowned and diademed; to left, a sceptre pattée; to right, a sceptre bottonnée.PILLELM REX ANGLI.Cross fleury with an annulet in centre, over cross saltire bottonnée.PICINC ON [ ]EWorcester26353088x21247PennyWilliam the ConquerorWilliam_the_ConquerorSilver11728Struck or hammeredCompleteMEDIEVALx14221MEDIEVALx14221x14221Metal detectorReturned to finderWAW23491A.jpg1225034images/vallnatt/Coin of Norman and Early Plantagenet England 1066-1180William I BMC iv (N 844)West MidlandsCertain12023-07-20T09:17:38.456Zfinds-11044511104451DENO-DAB250COINMEDIEVALA silver penny of William I (AD 1066 - 1087), dating to c. Ref: North 1994: 191.
The coin has a crack from the edge between 11 and 12 o'clock to about the centre of the flan.
The mint and moneyer for the coin are uncertain with the inscription difficult to read and quite garbled. Possible readings include +BIICNPI OII NEBV or +BIICNRI ON NEBM neither of which match known mint or moneyer names. Another suggestion is that the mint could be Hereford, reading HERII with the moneyer either Aegwini or Hethewi but this is very uncertain. With thanks to Dr Martin Allen (Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge) and the finder for their comments. 2929107410773WILTSSWM6009; EMC2022.04252022-09-05T16:44:55Z2022-11-22T11:02:33Z1.3PAS631619770013CE19.2122142141427143621445914422DorsetEast DorsetSixpenny HandleySU001850.96142422-2.00137282bands.shops.handy10WILT-61A31119751932Bust facing crowned and diademed between two stars+ PILLEM EX ANCross botonnée over quadrilateral with incurved sides with annulet in centre+ BIICNPI (or BIICNRI) ON NEBV (or NEBM) [possibly]9PennyWilliam the ConquerorWilliam_the_ConquerorSilver11728Struck or hammeredCompleteMEDIEVALx14221MEDIEVALx14221x14221Metal detectorReturned to finderWILT619774.jpg1202039images/sophaw123/Coin of Norman and Early Plantagenet England 1066-1180William I BMC v (N 845)South WestCertain12022-11-22T11:02:33.473Zfinds-10783541078354KENT-22651CCOINMEDIEVALA medieval silver cut halfpenny of William I (1066-1087), 'Canopy' type dating to the period c.1070-72(?), mint: Canterbury, moneyer: Manna.
