A slightly worn and bent, possibly irregular 11th-century silver late early-medieval penny of Edward the Confessor, 'Pyramids' type, struck by the moneyer Spracling probably at Winchester mint (c. 1065 - c. 1066 AD; North 831).
Two small points of copper-alloy corrosion product on the obverse suggest that this coin might be a plated copy; they may simply be accretions.
Although Spracling minted at London as well as Winchester (North 1994, 184, 186), only Winchester coins seem to have sufficiently elongated renderings of the moneyer's name to prevent space for the mint name. The fi…

A worn and bent late early-medieval mid 11th-century silver cut halfpenny of Edward the Confessor. Although the artefact has been bent over, obscuring the reverse face, the obverse bust suggests that it is of the 'Expanding Cross' type, probably North 823 (heavy coinage), and can thus be tentatively dated to either 1052 or 1053 AD.

A worn and broken silver late early-medieval cut halfpenny of Edward the Confessor, 'pointed helmet' type (1053-1056 AD; North 825). Having been halved, this coin has since suffered a loss and has been bent almost in half and broken resulting in a further small loss. Whilst it is remarkable that both elements have been found and united, it is difficult to take the identification of mint and moneyer much further.

A lead alloy trial piece, or a coin weight, stamped with coinage dies. The surface of the piece is worn, but it appears to have been struck from the same dies as BMC II, pg. 448, no. 1441 and BM CM 1915, 5-7 2568 (ex. Morgam, ex. Evans, ex. Chancton). The function of the piece is not totally clear. It could represent a trial piece for new dies, struck in lead before the commencement of the silver coinage. This seems particularly plausible since the coin was found so close to Winchester, and was struck with Winchester dies. However, the piece is quite thick and heavy and it seems quest…
