An Early Medieval silver coin; a penny of Eadgar (959 - 975), reform coinage (973 - 975). The coin is severely damaged with all the outer edge of the flan missing except for one letter of the legend. It is currently 16.1mm across, but would have had a diameter of about 18mm. It weighs 0.77g. Apart from the damage, the coin is hardly worn and is in very good condition. There is a small raised mark next to the cross pattee on the reverse which may be the result of a flawed die. These coins were minted at a large number of mints. Normally the moneyer and mint would be recorded on the rev…

A probably modern imitation lead alloy coin in the form of an Early Medieval silver coin. The piece appears to be inspired by a coin of Eadgar (959 - 975), Pre-reform two line type (959 - 973). It is very similar to North number 741, but the moneyer's name is 'NORB/ER' which is not one of the listed possibilities. The finder has had the piece tested using XRF and it is made of a high lead alloy. The crosses in the design seem thinner and cruder than the illustrated genuine coins. The piece is 22.63mm in diameter and 1.4mm thick. It weighs 3.9g.

A penny of Eadgar, AD959-975 (EMC 2014.0296); parts of the circumference are missing in two areas. The obverse has been gilded. The edge of a small circular hole survives in the edges of one of the breaks which, together with the gilding, suggests that the coin was converted into a brooch, the hole being one of two used to attach a pin. The coin is of a previously unrecorded type. In view of the missing portions the best guess is that the obverse would originally have read EA / DG / AR / REX (in a design reminiscent of the Luda penny of Alfred); it would fit in with other revival…

A silver penny of Edgar, early portrait, Bust Crowned type, c.959-973 AD. Part of one side of the coin is missing due to old breaks. This is by an East Anglian moneyer whose name might be reconstructed as 'Svartinc'. Dr. Martin Allen (pers. comm.) notes that this appears to be a new moneyer for Edgar's reign, but that a similar coin in the British Museum reading 'SAYDINC' may be the same moneyer. See North, 1980: no. 750.
