A complete copper alloy styca of Aethelred II dating to his first reign AD 840-844.
The obverse depicts a central cross surrounded by the legend ETHILRED REX referring to Aethelred II, king of Northumbria. The initial mark is also a cross and the legend is surrounded by a line of pellets although much of this has been worn away.
The reverse depicts five pellets in the centre which form a cross shape. This is surrounded by the legend which reads EANRED who was the moneyer. The initial mark is again a cross.
