Reverse Description: voided long cross dividing legend with pellets in angles. Reverse Inscription: WALTER[ON BRV]S. Moneyer: Walter. Mint: Bristol. Class: 3b North 987. Diameter: 18 mm. Weight: 1.2 grams. Note: round face, quite coarse work, with heavy beard with outer line of 3 large pellets each side of the central pellet.

Henry III silver half penny (cut). A crown, star and legend is shown on the obverse. The reverse depicts six pellets intersected by a long cross. The style of the images and letterforms suggest this is a 1248 Class 2 Long cross coin that was minted in Gloucester. It is like one illustrated in ‘English Hammered Coinage’, Volume I (North 1960 page 197, plate XV1). The obverse legend would have read as ‘HENRICUS REX TERCI’ (North 1960). The remains of this are visible on this example and reads [---]RCI HEN[---]. The legend on the reverse gives the mint and moneyer and reads HIA[…

A cut quarter of a possible Henry III short cross silver hammered penny. From the little evidence we do have from the remains of the coin, the three curls illustrating hair on the obverse may suggest that this coin can be classified as a Class VI, dating from 1210-1217 AD.
