A medieval penny of Stephen (1135-54), possibly irregular type based on 'Watford' type; mint and moneyer uncertain, possibly Safari of Colchester. Ref: North 1994: 203-15; Mack 1966: cf. nos. 177-8.
The obverse is mostly illegible (reading S[ ]). The reverse reads [ ]RE[ ]N CO(L). This would fit the inscription listed by Mack (1966: 41) for a coin of Safari of Colchester (SAFARE:ON:COL) listed under North 873 (Mack 1, 'Watford type). A fragment of a medieval silver penny of Stephen (1135-54), Watford type (c.1136-45; North 873), uncertain mint and moneyer (see below). Ref: North 1994: 203.
The is fragmentary, with c.50-60% of the coin remaining, struck on a squarish blank. Little of the obverse of reverse inscription remains, with the surviving reverse appearing to read +HIL[ ] perhaps indicating the moneyer is Hildibrand of Norwich although this is extremely uncertain.

A silver penny of King Stephen dating to the period AD 1136 - 1145. Cross moline with fleurs in angles reverse. Watford type. Moneyer uncertain. Mint uncertain.
North Vol 1, p.203, no.873.
During this turbulent period in English history many irregular coins were struck and coins were also issued from dies that had been deliberately defaced, possibly as a rejection of Stephen's authority.
