An early medieval silver penny of Aethelred II (978-1016), Last Small Cross type (N 777; bmc i), mint: uncertain, still indicates West Midlands, c.1009-17. The coin has lost all of its outer edge with no inscription surviving on obverse or reverse. This is most likely due to a fracturing of the coin around the edge of the outer circle, the weakest point on early medieval coins as opposed to clipping.

A probable MODERN IMITATION of an Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) silver penny of Ethelred II (978-1016). Bare headed type, 997-1003 (North 1994, 159, ref: 774). Moneyer Leofman, Canterbury mint. The coin's weight is too high for an early-medieval issue and its style and quality of execution is poor suggesting it is a modern imitation. Obverse: +EÐELRED REX ANGLO[ ]; Bare headed bust left Reverse: LEOF[M]ANM-OCÆNT   Voided long cross Diameter: 22.3mm. Weight: 2.97g. This coin has been double struck on the obverse and reverse.

A silver fragment of a Saxon cut halfpenny, one edge of which has been cut, the other edge has been fractured. The coin may be of Aethelred II (AD 978-1016), a variety of the last small cross type (AD 1009-1017) with a pellet on the reverse (see North 1994:160). North Type 778 notes that the bust reaches the edge of the coin, as it does on this example, while Type 780/1 (also London mint) notes that pellets can be found on the reverse of these coins (ibid.). The partial legend on the obverse suggests that the moneyer is someone like Leofwine or Leofwig, both of whom also struck at the…
