A somewhat bent but otherwise intact silver hammered penny of Edward the Confessor, dating c. 1046-1048. Trefoil/quadilateral type, moneyer Wulfsige at the mint of Ipswich. North 817. This coin has been recorded on the EMC as 2019.0072. John Sadler lists only one other coin of Wulfsige in this type from the mint of Ipswich (now in Ipswich Museum). This example is from the same dies.

The obverse shows a bearded bust facing right, wearing a pointed helmet. His right arm and hand are shown holding a sceptre fleury. The reverse shows a short cross voided with each arm ending in three small crescents, facing to the border. Struck by the moneyer Brihtwold in Oxford. As North no. 825.
