A heavily clipped penny of Charles I (1625-1649 AD). There are severe circumferential losses to this coin. Initial Mark probably two pellets; probably North Group E. The obverse has an inner circle and depicts a bearded bust, with heavy mustache with double-arched crown facing left and the denomination mark 'I' behind head right; the obverse legend reads: CAROL[VS] [...] [RE]X. The reverse has no inner circle and depicts a circular shield with new scroll garniture and no 'CR' on the side of shield; the legend reads: [....] THRONVM [...]. Cf. North 1991 Vol II, p163, No. 2272; simil…

A very worn and damaged Post Medieval silver halfpenny of Henry VII (AD 1485-1509) or Henry VIII (AD 1509-1547). Withers Type 3, not further defined. Uncertain mint and initial mark. Identification is based upon the type if single-arched crown and narrow hair, in addition to the remains of the obverse legend. Cf. North 1991 Vol II, Nos. 1732-1738; 1779-1780. Withers (2004, pp 43-45) discusses the difference in characteristics of both series of halfpennies and suggests that there is a distinctive difference in the narrowness of the hairstyle between rulers; narrow hair on the bust i…

A very worn medieval silver penny of Edward I (1272-1307) probably class 10, uncertain mint (c. AD 1300-1310). The extensive wear to this coin prevents further classification, aside from the closed 'C' and bifoliate crown.

A slightly worn silver Medieval short cross cut quarter penny of John (1199-1216), struck by the moneyer Miles, uncertain mint, Class 5 (AD 1204-1210).
The presence of a normal 'S' with central pellet might suggest this coin is class 5b (cf. North 1991 Vol II, No. 970), which would suit the moneyer Miles of Oxford, though the lack of mint prevents a secure classification.

An extremely worn cut half coin, probably silver penny dating to the early Medieval 'Norman Kings' period c. 1066-1154 AD. Probably of the 'Profile/Cross Fleury' Type of William I, c. 1066-1068.The remains of the obverse depicts the lower half of a draped bust breaking the inner circle and interrupting the legend; the remains of the legend are scant, consisting of [...] [R]E-X. The reverse is likewise unclear due to surface wear and the orientation of the cut in the coin. It seems likely that the inner circle has a simple cross fleury with an annulet at the centre. Although the revers…

An extremely worn and damaged silver penny of Post Medieval date, possibly a 'Sovereign type' penny of Henry VIII (1509-1547 AD).
The surface of the coin has been damaged severely with tears, bends and punctures; no discernible detail remains of the obverse, save the ring around the centre and a possible 'D' in the legend. The reverse depicts a very worn square-topped Tudor shield with a 'T' to the left side of the shield, above the cross line. No detail remains from the right side of the reverse, except for 'AS' in the legend, positioned at 5 o'clock. Remains of horizontal decorat…

A short cross cut halfpenny of John (1199-1216 AD). Class 5b, probably 5b3 or perhaps 5b2; dated to c. 1205-1207 AD. Initial mark missing. Mint missing, but likely to be London or perhaps Canterbury (see discussion below). Obverse depicts a crowned ruler facing; legend reads: [h]ENRICV[S] [REX]. The reverse depicts a voided short cross with quatrefoil in each quadrant; legend reads: (AR?)NAVD.O[N] [...]. Cf. North 1994 Vol I, No. 970b ii, iii.
Possibly moneyers include Arnavd or Ernavd from London and Canterbury; Hernavd from Canterbury; or Renavd from Norwich or York. As the penny …

A worn and severely misstruck Medieval silver penny of Edward III (1327-1377 AD). Probably 4th issue, post-Treaty coinage, c. 1369-1377 AD. Cf. North 1291-1297. Obv. [ED]WARDVS [...]; crowned bust facing; Reverse: illegible; long cross with three pellets in each quadrant and one central pip each.
Most of the diagnostic attributes of this coin are rendered illegible due to the coin being overstruck and rotated on the die. It also seems likely that the coin was mistruck with aspects of obverse and reverse designs on both faces. In spite of this, certain diagnostic features allow for a…
