Post Medieval base silver penny of Philip and Mary (1554-1558), initial mark unclear, minted at London, 1554-1558 AD, North (1991:129), no.1976. The coin is refered to as 'base' or 'billon' as it has only about 1/3rd silver. This debasement allowed a much larger and more 'usable' coin to be struck.
