A Medieval silver coin; probably a halfpenny of Edward IV, 2nd Reign (1471 - 1483), Durham mint but unlike the published examples. The coin is the right size for a half penny, but has the reverse legend of a penny, and has the additional feature of a V on the reverse in the CIVI quarter. The portrait is most similar to Withers type 4 (minted under Bishop Dudley), but the V to the left of the neck is not at all visible. The initial mark appears to be circular, probably a rose. There may be a pellet on the breast. There is a D at the centre of the reverse. Compare North number 1665 and …

Silver coin. Halfpenny of Edward IV (second reign, 1471-1483), made by trimming a penny. Possibly from a Durham penny. An example of an earlier penny of 1351 is described as having annulets with the pellets (North 1991, page 49 no. 1137); the obverse suggests a Durham penny of Edward IV (second reign, 1471-1483) issued under Bishop William Dudley (North no. 1666), implying a date of 1477-1483.
Obverse description: Facing bare shouldered bust with bifoliate crown, V to right of shoulders, legend removed by trimming up to the circle.
Reverse description: Long cross with three …
