Facing crowned bust with letter S on breast and letter D in centre of reverse cross. Mint of Durham under Bishop John Sherwood. Diameter 14.7mm, thickness 0.5mm and weight 0.7g.

A medieval silver hammered coin; a penny of Edward III, Florin coinage (AD 1344 - 1351), Durham mint, reverse type 4, with a lombardic M and a crozier. North number 1127 - 1124. The coin is worn and most of the legends are illegible. The measurements are: Diameter 16.8mm, width of metal 0.1mm, width of coin as slightly bent 1.1mm, weight 0.68g. The flan is slightly bent and there is a small crack.

A worn and clipped medieval silver penny of Henry VI (1422-61), probably leaf-pellet issue (1445-54; North 1511), mint: Durham. Ref: North 1991: 80. The coin is heavily clipped removing virtually all of the inscription on both sides and no full letters remain. The coin is also slightly bent, although it is impossible to ascertain whether this was pre- or post-depositional.
