A medieval short-cross cut halfpenny of John (1199-1216), class 5b2, struck by Pieres at Durham (dating to 1205-7).
Reverse: [...]RES.ON. [...], where the incomplete letter after the second stop has a vertical upright.
Reference: North 970 ii.
With especial thanks to Rob Webley for pinpointing the class. Mr Webley comments: '...the form of the letter R is 5b2 onwards, and the letter E brackets it at the other end with 6a (as with the moneyer). But looking at relevant coins within this bracket, the position of the letter N (etc) only really works with 5b2, and everything else stack…
