A silver early medieval cut halfpenny of Cnut (1016-1035), Quatrefoil type (North 871) dating to c.AD1017-1023, moneyer: uncertain, mint: Chester. Ref: North 1994: 167. In addition to being cut in half along the voided cross on the reverse, the coin is missing large chip between 3 and 4 o'clock as seen on the obverse. Obverse: Crowned bust left, within quatrefoil; [ ]NGLOR[ ] (OR ligated) Reverse: Long cross voided on quatrefoil; each limb terminates in three crescents, pellets at apex of cusps. +[.../.../...]LEG

An incomplete silver penny of Cnut, Short Cross type (N790) dating to AD 1029-1035. Moneyer probably Gunnleifr [GVNLEOF], only known at Chester. the obverse depicts bust facing left, in front sceptre. The reverse shows a short cross which normally would have a voided centre but in this case a hole is there. portion of the inscription missing above and behind the head. North, J.J. 1994.
