A silver, Roman Republican Denarius, minted by Mark Anthony, legionary issue for the VIII (8th) legion. Obverse: a depiction of a Roman galley facing right. Inscription: ANT AVG [III VIR R P C]. Reverse: a depiction of a legionary eagle in the centre, with two standards either side. Inscription: LEG VIII. The condition of the coin is good, with only patches of minor ware.

A complete but worn silver denarius of Mark Anthony, struck at a travelling mint, dating to the period c.32-31BC (Reece period 1). Obverse description: [ANT AVG] above and [II]I VI[R R P C] below; galley right. Reverse: Illegible. As RRC no. 544. These coins were struck by Mark Antony for the use of his fleet and legions when he was preparing for the struggle with Octavius, which culminated in the Battle of Actium on the 2nd of September, 31 BC (Grueber, 1970, 526). These denarii are often found very worn, Because they were made from debased silver they were not hoarded at the time of issue. Therefore, they could remain in circulation for up to around 250 years.
