An incomplete silver early medieval penny of the Vikings possibly minted in the name of Sihtric (c. 921-927), imitating coins issued in the name of St Peter, Phase 1 or 2, Two-Line (Horizontal), (North 551 or 553), minted in York, c.905-920. Diameter 18.4mm, Thickness 0.6mm. Weight 0.93g,
The coin is influenced by the Swordless St Peter type, which are inscribed with SCI PETRIMO (cf North 551) or a blundered form of this. Megan Gooch says these letters "get more random as shapes such as the key find a home in the field and take up design space". pers. comm 8/4/2019.
However, Gareth Williams says the inscription is closer to Sihtric than St Peter, but "in the case of imitative die-cutting which is not entirely literate, it does not have to be either/or, but could draw from both". Many coins of this period appear to have inscriptions derived from Edward the Elder as well as St Peter and it is possible that this example was influenced by coins of Sihtric and St Peter. This would not fit well with established chronology of these coin types - Sihtric's coinage are currently thought to begin after swordless types stop being minted - although it is not possible to assign hard exact dates to the types anyway. Unfortunately, the coin is incomplete and is missing a letter or letters that might give more of an indication of its origins. Gareth Williams pers comm 8/4/2019.

The reverse legend differs from the example recorded in North (1994, 116). North says "There is considerable variation in the legends with those on later coins often very blundered".

An incomplete silver early medieval anonymous Anglo-Scandinavian (Viking) penny, dating to the period c. AD 905-19. St. Peter of York Phase 1 swordless/two-line type (North 551), mint: York. Ref: North 1994: 116; Gooch 2014 (in Naismith, Allen and Screen eds 2014: 459-70).
The blundered legends suggest this is a later variety of the type.
The coin is complete except for a portion of the edge, in the first quarter of the coin (obverse) which extends far enough into the coin to affect parts of the obverse inscription. The fabric of the coin is cracked, with a crack visible from the area of the break to the bottom of the coin (6 o'clock obverse).

An incomplete early medieval silver penny of St Peter of York, two-line/horizintal type belonging to Phase 2 of the coin age, dating c.AD910-20 (North 553), mint: York. Ref: North 1994: 116.
The coin is in poor condition, badly chipped around the edge and missing about 40% of the field and inscription. Its weight (0.7g) would be consistent with a penny of this type.
