The coin survives only as a fragment, approximately two-thirds of the outer circle missing, broken away along fracture lines roughly following the inner circle. Silver hammered penny, late Anglo-Saxon of Æthelwulf of Wessex (839-858). The flan is damaged in two places, with some loss. Obverse: cross with clockwise P shaped arms with pellet in centre and pellet in each quarter, within a beaded border. +EÐELVV[ ]REX. Reverse: cross pattee with wedge in each angle and the legend MANN[...]M. This is a previously unknown type for Athelwulf of Wessex by the Rochester moneyer Manning, probably minted in the late 840s. The closest comparison previously published is Naismith (2011) type R30.3.
