A Post Medieval copper-alloy Irish 'gun money' shilling of James II (AD 1685-1688), dated February 1689. Mint of Dublin. These coins were minted during the Williamite War in Ireland (AD 1689-1691) and were to be redeemed for silver coinage after the war. They were made from old cannons, bells and scrap metal. A copper alloy James II Irish Gun Money Shilling. This coin, from the small issue, was struck in June 1690. The obverse has the laureate Head of James II and the reverse has the crowned sceptres with XII. The coin is in worn condition with a smooth dark green patina with brown staining and surface damage.
