Reverse: Crown over crossed two sceptres, VI between, J R positioned either side. Legend: 1689. MAG.BR.FRA.ET.HIB.REX These coins Irish issues produced by James in his war to reclaim the throne from William III and are known as gunmoney pieces as they were made from guns and other ammunition melted down to pay James’ troops. They were tokens to be exchanged for silver coins at the end of the of the war.

A Post Medieval copper-alloy Irish 'gun money' sixpence of James II (AD 1685-1688), dated January 1689. Mint of Dublin. Dimensions: diameter: 21.22mm; weigh: 3.00g. These coins were minted during the Williamite War in Ireland (AD 1689-1691) and were to be redeemed for silver coinage after the war. They were made from old cannons, bells and scrap metal. Worn silver Irish sixpence of James I, first coinage, dating 1603-1604 AD. Obverse has the crowned bust of the king facing right with the legend IACOBVS D'.G'.ANG'.SCO'.FRA ET HIB REX. The reverse has a crowned harp with the legend TVEATVR VNITA DEVS. The image of the obverse and reverse is worn but the legend remains. The obverse legend appears poorly struck. The coin has been bent into what is commonly reffered to as a love token.
