A medieval contemporary copy (probably) of a sterling imitation of John of Avenses (1280-1304) minted at Mons in the mid 1290s (Mayhew M159-160, see also M34 for official issue). The coin appears to have been produced on a base metal core and silver plated. Given its condition it is uncertain whether the coin definitely belongs to Mayhew's 'enigmatic' group.
