A worn and clipped medieval silver Venetian soldino, possibly of Doge Nicolo Tron (AD 1471-1473). The obverse has the Doge standing or kneeling left, holding banner with a mint control mark (P) in right field and ONV within the legend. The Reverse has no discernible legend with what may be the winged lion of St Mark, holding book of gospels, with a single remaining annulet. Given the discernible features of this heavily eroded fragment of a coin, this may be a Soldino of Nicolo Tron c. 1471-1473 AD. See - IOW-321B35 for comparison.

Silver Venetian soldino of Doge Nicolo Tron (1471-1473) with Doge kneeling left holding banner with L / M in right field on the obverse and the winged lion of St. Mark facing within a quadrilobe, an annulet in each angle, on the reverse. The Venetian soldino, meaning "little shilling", circulated unofficially as halfpennies in England during the 15th and early 16th centuries, due to a lack of small change in the country at the time. They were nicknamed "galyhalpens" or galley-halfpence after the "galley-men" who imported them: the merchants on the Venetian galley fleet who came to …

A worn, Medieval silver Venetian soldino of Doge Nicolo Tron (1466-1473), minted at Venice between 1466-1473. Measurements: Diameter: 12.8mm; thickness; 0.5mm and weight: 0.29g. Discussion: During the early 15th and early 16th centuries the English economy experienced so serious a shortage of English-struck halfpennies that people began using foreign coinage to fill the gap. The silver soldino was brought in with the Annual Venetian trading fleets. There are three main types of soldino early, middle and late, and this example is of the middle type (AD 1466-1473).
