A cut and broken silver Islamic dirham, possibly of the Samanid or Abbasid dynasties. The coin is extremely worn rendering much of the diagnostic detail illegible inhibiting any further positive identification.
Dirhams circulated for an extended period of time in Arabia, Scandinavia and England and are commonly found as hack silver in the Viking period. This association is likely to date this fragment to the mid 9th - 10th centuries though the coin may have circulated for a period of time to either side of these brackets.
