An Early-Medieval silver early penny (sceat) of Secondary Phase Series M (type 45), sub-class f, dating to c. AD 725-30/35. Ref: Gannon 2013: p.125, cf. pl. 25 no. 573 (possible die link).
Obverse description: Sinuous animal standing right; pointed ear, long tongue extending downwards from open mouth; one front and one hind leg visible; curved 'tail' extending upwards from back; four pellets to left of tail, two pellets underneath the animal's head, six pellets beneath animal; circular pellet border surrounding.

A complete early medieval Merovingian gold tremissis, 'mint and moneyer' or 'National Series' broadly dating c.AD580-670 although this coin may date c.620-640, mint unknown but probably Austrasia/Frisia (roughly encompassing parts of NE France, N Germany and the Low Countries), cf. Belfort nos 3016, 3029-32, MEC1, nos 510-11. Refs: Belfort 1892: 380, 383; Grierson and Blackburn 1986: 125, pl. 24.
The coin was struck on a small flan with the inscription only partially visible owing to the die being larger than the flan.

Treasure ref. 2018 T928: an Early-Medieval gold coin pendant. The pendant is made from a 9th-century Anglo-Frisian copy of a Carolingian solidus of Louis the Pious (814-840). The coin has been pierced directly above the head.
