A silver plated, unclipped contemporary copy of a Roman siliqua recorded originally as a coin of Julian (AD 360-363), but perhaps more plausibly copying a coin of Valens (AD 364-378), dating to the period c.AD 367-375 (Reece period 19). VOT/X/MVLT/XX reverse type depicting the legend within a wreath. Prototype of the mint of Lyon. cf. RIC IX, p. 46, no. 19; Hoxne no. 302. This type of coin is often referred to as the 'Tribute penny' from the bible (Matthew 22, 17-21), although it is more likely that what was being referred to was the silver drachma from Caesarea Cappadocia in Western Turkey (Moorhead: 2013, p57).
