Copper alloy halfpence of King George III. Obverse laurate and cuirassed bust right, legend GEORGIVS III REX with stops between phrases. Reverse Britannia, date under probably AD 1774 inscribed BRITAIN NIA with stop. Die axis 6 o'clock. Little remains of the outer milled edge which is very worn. Thanks to the finder for identification

The coin was found along a path close to St Mary the Virgin Church in Carleton during gardening works to install beech trees. The following details have been provided by the finder:

A contemporary forgery of a George III shilling, dated 1816. It has a copper alloy base, probably brass, though white metal was sometimes used, and a silvered coating, traces of which remain in place, The coin is 23.1mm in diameter and 1.2mm thick. It weighs 3.47g.
Owing to a lack of small change at the end of the eighteenth century a large number of forged coins were in circulation.
