A silver Post-Medieval twopence of Charles II dating to the period AD 1676. Crowned three interlinked C’s reverse. Mint of London. Spink (2012), p.341, no.3388. The coin is pierced at 12 o’clock on the obverse. Some pierced/modified coins can come within the remits of Treasure Act 1996, including all finds of pierced silver or gold coins up to AD 1180 and some thereafter depending upon the nature of the piercing. Pierced medieval and later silver coins are however fairly common single finds and many are also known from hoards.

A silver threepence of Charles II dating circa 1696. The coin is unclipped, and has been pierced, probably as a consequence of measures taken during the Great Recoinage of 1696. This Act required: "Persons having unclipped hammered Monies before 10th Feb 1695, to cause the same to be punched; After 10th Feb no unclipped hammered Monies to be current unless so punched".
