A silver Post-Medieval twopence of Charles II dating to the period AD 1676. Crowned three interlinked C’s reverse. Mint of London. Spink (2012), p.341, no.3388. The coin is pierced at 12 o’clock on the obverse. Some pierced/modified coins can come within the remits of Treasure Act 1996, including all finds of pierced silver or gold coins up to AD 1180 and some thereafter depending upon the nature of the piercing. Pierced medieval and later silver coins are however fairly common single finds and many are also known from hoards.

A complete silver twopence of Charles II (AD 1660 to AD 1685), dating to the period AD 1679. Milled at the Tower of London. Coin has been pierced at 6 o'clock on the reverse through to the obverse. The piercing is circular, with an internal diameter of 1.7 mm. C.f. Spink, p 338, no 3388. Pierced coins during the 17th Century are not removed from circulation and still function as coins. Therefore it falls outside of the requirements of the Treasure Act 1996 and is not considered to be potential Treasure. Diameter: 14.2 mm Thickness: 0.9 mm Weight: 0.8 g
