This is a very unusual piece. The mintmark S P // ML is the last issue from the London mint in the reign of Carausius. However, the obverse legend and type appear to be earlier. The obverse of this coin has a very similar style to a gold aureus found in Derbyshire (DENO-651C91). This coin was probably struck soon after the arrival of Carausius in Britain.
