An imitation of a tetarteron of Alexios I (1081-1118), post-reform (1092) of the mint of Constantinople. Reference for the real issue (and not this imitation) can be found in Dumbarton Oaks Coins vol 4, no 33. Julian Baker of the Ashmolean Museum (Oxford) indicated that it was a good imitation, though the style was not quite right, and the coin itself is too round and not irregular enough to be an official issue of the era. That said, it is probably contemporary as these have very little collector's value, unless made as a tourist trinket in more recent centuries.

A copper-alloy Byzantine pentanummium/five nummi piece of emperor Justinian I (527-565). The obverse is now blank but would originally have had a bust of an Emperor to the right and an inscription. On the reverse is the Greek letter epsilon or number 5, referring to the denomination of 5 nummi. There is a cross in the right of the field. It was struck between 542-565 in Constantinople. Copper-alloy nummus of Constans II (AD 641-668), Standing emperor and large M, Constantinople, possibly AD 655/6. cf. Dumbarton Oaks Catalogue Vol II, Part 2, p. 452, 75-76. The coin is overstruck or double-struck and this identification is tentative. This is a very unusual coin to find in Suffolk, unless it is a modern loss (e.g. from a coin collector). Particularly unusual is the fact that it is not pierced or mounted in any way.
