Description: Medieval silver annular brooch, complete with silver pin. The frame of the brooch is circular, thick and flat to make a rectangular cross-section. The pin is held in a constriction, and has an open loop. There is a transverse double moulding at the junction of loop and shaft, below which the cross-section of the shaft is D-shaped or trapezoidal.  The frame is engraved on both faces with letters which read clockwise from the pin constriction. Because the pin has a clear front and reverse, it is possible to identify the front and reverse of the frame too; the…

Silver brooch fragments. Two joining cast fragments of a brooch with interlace ornament on its display side and relict pin gear on an otherwise plain reverse; the source record suggests gilding and niello to be present on the display face and identifies this as of Terslev Style (Kershaw 2010 no. 32). The suggested material and age of the object may require its submission to the Treasure process, ref. TBC. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 900-1000 Length: 27mm, Width: 24mm, Thickness: 6.4mm, Weight: 4.93gms

Silver annular brooch that has a circular cross-section frame with a constriction in one side for the pin. The pin is complete and made from silver, one side of which has been formed into a loop to enable attachment to the frame, a flanged transvers ridge decorated with stamped annulars and separates the loop from the main shaft of the pin. Brooches of this material, form and style of decoration are generally dated to c. AD 1200-1400 with various examples published in Egan & Pritchard (2002: 249-254). A post-medieval silver annular brooch dating to c.1600-1700. The brooch consists of a circular frame, that has a flat rectangular cross-section set at an oblique angle. A circular hole mounts the silver pin that has a curved penannular loop for attachment.  Similar Post-Medieval examples have been reported at treasure HAMP-974996 (2017 T530) and KENT-589DC5 (2018 T579).  These brooches can have a date range from 1500-1700. An example recorded at GLO-E7A921 (2020 T374) benefited from a makers mark enabling more accurate dating to the 17th century. Conclusion: In terms of ag…

Description and identification Two halves of a decorated silver annular brooch frame. It is misshapen, with each part forming an elongated ‘U’ shape, which was once likely circular. The level of distortion obscures the form of the decoration on each ‘face’. There are regular, equally spaced notches infilled with niello across one ‘face’, with intermittent groups of four or five incised or stamped dots.  The other ‘face’ is largely plain with occasional groups of notches visible in one area. The two halves join at one break but do n…

Description of the finds Silver crossbow brooch, complete and well preserved with little sign of corrosion, apart from the pin, which is of copper alloy and only survives as badly corroded fragments. The knob at the head is quasi-onion shape rising from a double ridged collar. The arms are a hexagonal tube that houses a copper alloy axial bar for the pin, which was hinged. At each end there is a knob, the same as that at the head of the brooch. The bow is narrow and undecorated apart from at the junction of the bow with the foot, where a length of silver wire is coiled round the bow f…

Description & identification The plain pin has a broad wrap around head and transverse raised ridge at the junction with the shaft. Length 28mm; head width 5mm (incomplete); weight 0.99g. The object has not undergone any cleaning or conservation. To judge from its colour and weight and visual comparison with brooches and other silver dress accessories in the collections of the Department of History & Archaeology, the alloy is well in excess of 10% silver. Conclusions The pin form and width indicate that it is from a medieval annular brooch of thirteenth or early fourteenth…

An incomplete Medieval silver annular brooch with decorative twisted (cable pattern) frame, dating to c. AD 1200-1400. The frame is slightly bent. An incomplete Late Iron Age to Roman copper-alloy Langton Down brooch dating to AD 20-65. T-shaped in plan, the piece is virtually complete save for the missing spring mechanism and the fact that much of the wings have broken away. The complete wings would have been cylindrical with straight, solid edges. The wings are now broken, essentially hemispherical and leave a void where the spring mechanism would have rested. The pin would have projected from a median voided slot. The upper bow is rectangular in plan and plano-convex in section and projects from the wi…

A fragment of a silver gilt annular brooch of medieval date (c.1200-1300). Description: The fragment remains as one of the two zoomorphic terminals that would have been joined by a bar around which the pin would have looped. The fragment is shallow D-shaped in cross section and curved in plan. The terminal is in the form of an uncertain beast's head with a rounded snout and inset eyes. The beast's head has a central line either side of which are diagonally incised strokes, indicating fur which end in small mouldings, possibly ears. Beyond these, the brooch is decorated with a …

Silver annular brooch that has a circular frame that is square cross-section. The frame is decorated with a line of closely spaced pellets on the face and reverse that are bordered by a raised band on both the inside and outside edges.  A constriction for the pin on one side of the frame retains the silver pin, this has an annular loop secured around constriction, the shaft of the pin has a circular cross-section and narrows to a point. An identical example was found at Tytherington in South Gloucestershire and recorded at GLO-315581 (2013T391).

An incomplete silver annular brooch. The brooch is circular although the frame is now distorted into a sub-oval shape. It is formed of silver wire wrapped around a central silver wire frame, in very detailed and elaborate form which creates a box shaped profile. Some three quarters of this wrapped wire decoration remains, the rest of the frame consists only of the central wire. The pin is intact although no longer closes because of the distortion to the brooch, is it an elongated triangular shape and is attached by wrapping around the frame: at this point the frame is not…

A complete silver annular brooch. The brooch is complete although twisted and folded, and appears to have been cut or stamped from a blank. It is made from thin silver, approximately 0.5mm thick, and 6mm wide. The hole for the pin has been crudely punched from the back of the brooch, the end of the pin is looped through this to secure it. The pin is pointed at the termination. The brooch is plain apart from a mark punched into the back that may be a hallmark or initials - shown in the inset of the image. It looks like a very elaborate I or L, and H, or possibly W and D. …
