Silver Finger ring. Band of very slightly plano-convex section bearing faint traces of worn vertical and horizontally inscribed decoration, perhaps the remnant of a billeted scheme. The band is broken although complete. The finder suggests an Anglo-Saxon date, though finger rings dated to the Early Medieval period with such a scheme as is suspected here are more massive than this example. Suggested date: Unknown, 1600-1900. This reporter considers a lack of assured and diagnostic detail precludes such dating as would be required to embark on a Treasure process. Internal diameter: …

Undiagnostic hammered silver bar Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface of the bar conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate silver content of 70%, the balance being copper with some zinc, tin and lead; it weighs 7.21 grams. The bar is of rectangular section, square ended and with slightly concave sides from hammering the top and bottom faces flat; length: 26 mm; width: 8 mm. There is an irregular depression part way along the centre of one face. The bar shows no diagnostic features and it is not possible to assign it to any particular period…

Description: Battered strip of thin lightweight white metal, perhaps silver. The original dimensions of the strip must have been c. 26mm x 18mm, but it has been folded roughly in half down the long axis. The fold is not particularly sharp, and it is possible that it was folded over something organic such as cloth or thin leather which has not survived. On each face are two rows of sub-triangular or rectangular punchmarks set transversely and apparently not in neat pairs. The stamp used may have been a square stamp held at an angle. Dimensions: Length 25.27 mm. Width as folded 10.01 …

Description: Two fragments of an apparently silver mount, probably from a vessel. The mount is made from thin silver sheet, and consists of a long corrugated band with a scalloped lower edge. Four pendant scallop shapes survive, two still attached to the band; each one has a punched aperture of diameter 1.4mm, probably for attachment to the edge of the vessel. The larger fragment retains part of the straight band which is decorated with five parallel ridges apparently pressed from the back and with hollow reverses; the central ridge is broader than the rest. One end of this band …

A fragmentary silver unidentified object of possible Early Medieval date, possibly a Viking finger ring or a Saxon strap end. The object is a piece of sheet silver, in two pieces and incomplete, with tapering sides from 10.5mm wide at the wider end of the large fragemnt, to 7.3mm wide at the opposite end. The sheet is 0.8mm thick but is bent and distorted. It is not clear where the detached piece fits, and there may be pieces missing from between the two. One face of the object is decorated. Silver and copper alloy unidentified object. A disc of cast silver sheet of thickness 0.2-0.6mm and diameter [originally probably greater than] 15mm and in its form resembling a worn coin flan, which is firmly attached to the end of a square section copper alloy bar of scantling 4.6mm by 4mm;the bar is broken at the edge of the silver disc. This might be from a brooch or other fitting which used a coin flan for decorative effect, though no parallels for this form are known to this reporter. Treasure reference 2017 T1058: an globule of solidified molten casting waste. The object is irregular in form and section with no identifying features. The surface isdull silver in colour with traces of copper corrosion. In the absence of metallurgical analysis it is unclear as to whether the metal is silver or another white metal such as tin. Conclusion Due to the undiagnostic nature of the find, it cannot be securely dated as being over 300 years old and as such would appear to fall outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

Complete ring made from plaited silver wire. Each strand of the plait consists of four wires, and (from the photo) each appears to be three-ply with the three wires tightly twisted together. The ring is now slightly squashed, and measures 16.04 mm x 13.95 mm externally and 11.14 mm x 8.92 mm internally, and weighs 0.98g Similar rings made of plaited groups of silver wires are known a…

Treasure reference 2018 T383: a small hollow cylinder of silver. The cylinder has a double collar at both ends. The cylinder extends either side of the collars, and both ends are broken shortly thereafter. Traces of gilding are visible. Discussion: The object has no dating evidence itself, but is from a known Early-Medieval productive site and is probably evidence for silver working of that date. Conclusion: In conclusion, this object constitutes a prima facie case of treasure by consisting of more than 10% precious metal content in that it is silver and gold, and is of an a…

Silver ear ring. A ring of probably drawn wire of diameter 1.4mm with its ends touching, though the nature of the closure of the ring is uncertain as one or both ends may be broken. Of what remains, one terminal appears thickened. A white powdery material appears on about half the object. The finder kindly suggests a Viking Age date, though the object type might suggest earlier periods from the Roman onwards. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Early Medieval, 43-1000.
