Record ID: HESH-7CF281
Object type: WORKED OBJECT
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An oval shaped fine-grained sedimentary rock. The edges of this stone seem to have been augmented by chipping which have created a slightly sharpened edge. However the nature of the stone, being relatively soft, would preclude it being used as a scraping tool in most situations. The find of this stone is from an area which has produced other stone artefacts and this has been recorded as part of that assemblage. Measures 49.4mm length, 40.5mm width, is 12.2mm thick and weighs 34.03 grams

An incomplete base from a Purbeck limestone mortar of Medieval date. Almost half of the flat, circulat base survives intact, as well as the base of the walls of the vessel, the remainder now missing due to old breaks. The base appears to have been deliberately cut in half, and may therefore represent re-use at a later date. The interior surface is slightly concave, smooth and shows signs of use-wear, contrastingly the sides of the wall have a relatively coarse finish. The fragment measures 210mm in width, 89mm in length, 51mm in thickness, approximately 220mm in diameter, and weighs 13…

A fragment of a puddingstone quern of probable Roman date. The piece is sub-circular in plan. One surface has been deliberately flattened, the other is irregular and has been broken off. There is a small piece of a sub-vertical face, indicating that it comes from the outer edge of the quern. The object measures 62.6mm in diameter, 39.4mm high and weighs 160.07g.

A fragment of a Roman rotary hand-quern, made of puddingstone, probably quarried in East Hertfordshire. Such querns are thought to date from around the mid 1st to mid 2nd centuries AD. The rounded outer side, domed upper surface and flat bottom face indicate that the original stone would have been of typical hemispherical form. There is no sign of the central hole or of any means of rotation. The piece measures 184mm long, 136.5mm wide and 69.6mm thick. The weight is 1928.9g.

Perforated stone spindle whorl or net weight of unknown date – probably Mesolithic – Modern (6500 BC – 1800 AD). The stone used to make the artefact is a micaceous sandstone which is a mid brown grey colour. The weight is irregular being broadly sub-circular in plan and D shaped in cross section. The central hole is drilled from both ends, is broadly circular in shaped and waisted (egg-timer) in cross section. The maximum diameter of the hole measures 8.4mm. The whorl is not decorated and the surface is rough. Spindle whorls are used for a long period of time and as such are very…

A fragment of a Romano-British Hertfordshire puddingstone rotary hand-quern. Probably dates from the mid 1st to mid 2nd century AD. This piece was found in close proximity to two other examples of puddingstone querns - see PAS records BH-890FC8 and BH-88C4B7. The piece is irregular in shape, measuring 112.8mm long, 90mm wide and 55.5mm thick. Part of the flat grinding surface survives. The opposite surface has a curvature consistent with the artefact's original hemispherical form. The fragment weighs 661.2g.

Fragment, less than 20%, of the upper stone of a Romano-British Hertfordshire Puddingstone rotary hand-quern of typical hemispherical form, AD c.50-150. The quern may have been worn to the end of its designed life, as indicated in the drawing; this is the usual state of survival. Parts of the outer surface and the drilled grain hopper survive. The diameter has been c 260 mm; a relatively small example. No signs of handle socket or handle band groove remain. The surviving fragment measures 157.6mm long, 107.6mm wide and 92.9mm high. The weight is 1911.2g.

Upper stone of a Hertfordshire Puddingstone rotary hand-quern, over 90% complete, but with probable plough damage across the upper surface. The lower surface is discoloured dark grey and may have found later use as a hearthstone; but it is not heavily burnt. It differs markedly from most Hertforshire Puddingstone querns, being much flatter then the typical hemispherical or sub-conical form, dated to AD c.50-100 or 150, and found widely in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, and counties eastward across East Anglia. It is believed to belong to an earlier group (AD c.25-50), on the present evid…

Sedimentary, sandstone, loom weight of unknown date, probably post Roman 800 – 1500 AD. The loom weight is broadly sub rectangular in both plan and profile. It is formed from a relatively hard sandstone. A small broadly rectangular hole has been punched in the upper edge, and it is suggested that this hole allowed the weight to be suspended. Similar weights are associated with loom, although it is possible that this represents a broken (and possibly reused) sandstone roof tile. None of the surfaces have been overly worked and none are smooth or polished. The weight measures 93.6mm…

Coarse sandstone rotary disc quern fragment; uncertain date - Roman to Medieval. Fragment of a circular disc; one surface has a 65mm width perimeter border then it is recessed to a depth of about 10mm and slopes gently towards the centre; the other surface is flat and smoothed through use. The sandstone contains fossil sea shells (bivalves?). Diameter 400+mm, thickness at perimeter 65-70mm, thickness at most central point 30mm.

The spindle whorl is sub-circular in plan, its diameter measures 38mm and is 11.5mm thick. The circular stone is most probably the lower section of a quern, dating it is however, a tad difficult as this type of rotary quern, introduced to Britain by the Romans remained in common use throughout the ages, certainly up to and beyond the late medieval. Typically, a thick round stationary lower stone in which there is normally a socket for a spindle, sat on the ground and a rotating upper stone sat over the lower stone. The two stones are then held in register by a central shaft. This stone is drilled right through with an egg timer shaped hole (centre diameter 2 cm - outer d…

Incomplete whetstone of probable Early Medieval or Medieval date (c.800 – 1400). The whetstone is formed from a very fine sedimentary mica rich sandstone or siltstone and bedding planes are clearly visible in the profile. The whetstone is broadly sub-rectangular in plane with slightly tapering sides, and is also sub-rectangular in cross section. The edges are slightly bevelled. A relatively small suspension hole has been drilled in the upper part of the whetstone; this has been achieved by drilling (probably using a bow saw / drill) from both edges which has created an egg-timer shap…
