Rim sherd from a medieval cooking pot (1100 – 1350 AD). The sherd is heavily abraded and a fresh open section cannot be seen; therefore it is impossible to provide a description of the fabric. The pottery is a mid grey white colour; the outer surface is discoloured from sooting from fire. A direct parallel is not known as pottery types are unique to their location, the overall form is similar to that known from the 12th and 13th century. Although the size and capacity of the vessel cannot be suggested from this sherd, it is possible to suggest a diameter of 24cm; the sherd represe…

Post medieval fishing net weights; fired clay, sub-oval objects with piercing at one end suggesting that they were probably intended as fishing net weights or similar. The location of the find (within 100m of the bank of the River Trent) adds evidence to this interpretation. The weights are of a fine, bright orange-red fabric, similar to terracotta. There were originally six weights, found together, but three have unfortunately been broken. The remaining three are as follows: Large, sub-oval weight with broad, oval cross-section. The weight has a single, sub-circular hole through on…

A Roman Amphora handle sherd. The handle is round in section with a slight ridge on the upper surface near the surviving upper junction with the neck. The lower joint to the body does not survive (dimensions L 140mm; W 90mm; T 48mm). The handle is from a large globular olive oil amphora type known as a Dressel 20 (DR 20) produced in the southern Spain/Portugal area at sites clustered around the Guadalquivir river valley. These vessels had an average capacity of 60-65 litres and are over 0.5m in height (Tyres 1996, 87-8). The fabric of this handle is the typical early variant with …
