Large cast lead-alloy repair piece, still attached to a small piece of Samian ware, dating from the Roman period, c. AD43-410. Lead repairs for Samian dishes were not uncommon in Roman times. Samian dishes were imported from e.g. Gaul and, though not irreplaceable, were certainly precious enough to be repaired rather than thrown away. Some lead staples are small and unobtrusive, but this one was very chunky and may have tried to hold together two larger sherds or part of a larger vessel.

Roman urn, found complete with cremation and soil still inside. The excavation of the urn revealed nothing but ashes, bone fragments and soil (carried out by Ian Caruana). The vessel itself seems to be a large jar of Black-Burnished 1 ware, possibly a local product made at Muncaster in Eskdale during the first half of the 2nd century AD. It is a sturdy vessel made from grey fabric with a large field of lattice decoration adorning the outside of its upper body.
