A rim sherd from a Roman New Forest colour-coated ware beaker.  The rim is slight and the side wall below straight.  There is a step down to an expanded, rounded body.  The matrix is light grey and the slip dark grey.  The slip survives well but for a few losses and the loss of an inclusion.  The sherd has an irregular quadrilateral form.

A small body sherd from a Roman greyware vessel. The sherd is broadly rectangular in form. It has a fine, sandy fabric with some micaceous inclusions. It is shallowly curved in profile and is thought to be from a 'tighter' vessel rather than one more 'saggy' in form (Helen Rees pers. comm. 19 December 2009). The exterior is light grey in colour while the interior is more yellowy.

A rim sherd from a Roman greyware necked jar or bowl. The fabric is quite fine sandy and light grey in colour; the exterior has a darker, burnished colour. The everted rim would have had a diameter of c. 80mm. Below the rim is a the flat section before the vessel expands to a convex flat body.

A pair of small body sherds from Roman grog-tempered vessels. They are both irregular five-sided shapes, quite abraded and very shallowly curved internally. One is grey while the other has an oxidised pink-orange face and a dark grey face around a grey core. The temper is not very well sorted and anything up to 2-3mm across. The grey sherd measures 28.8 by 28.0 by 9.8mm, and weighs 8.48g. The oxidised sherd measures 29.65 by 26.9 by 8.6mm, and weighs 7.66g. A combined weight is given below. The abraded base from a pottery vessel of probable Late Iron Age date. The base is now sub-circular and very shallowly convex. Walls continue for up to 12.6mm beyond the solid base which is up to c. 20.0mm thick. The walls begin to flare out slightly, the object having narrowed to a diameter of c. 40.0mm from the base. The fabric is quite a fine one that has largely oxidised a dull orange colour.

The rim is c. 12.5mm thick and has a central grooved channel uppermost; the sherd has broken directly below the flange. The outer surfaces have an oxidised light orange hue. This bowl was possibly made at the New Forest kilns.

A large rim sherd from a late early-medieval to medieval vessel (c. 1050 - c. 1225 AD). The flattened rim (Th.: 15.2mm) is indented below, with the body curving outwards beyond. The core of the sherd is grey and the surfaces are variably oxidised, up to an orange/brown colour. The fabric is chalk and flint tempered, mostly flint, with around 20% inclusions, fair-well sorted. The inclusions are generally 0.5 to 3mm across, with some pieces up to a maximum of 4.6mm. The fabric could be Kennet Valley A/B.

A rim sherd from an internally glazed medieval vessel, possibly a dripping pan. The vessel has a thick rim (max. Th.: 12.55mm), before narrowing as it angled down (Th.: 5.3mm). The external surface has a slightly blackened treatment in places, while the glaze spills over the lip of the rim very slightly. The internal glaze, where it survives, is a yellow-brown colour. The fabric is fine and sandy.

A square cross-sectioned handle part from a medieval jug. The off-white pottey features varying numbers of slash marks which would have helped regulate the firing of the vessel. These can be found on the upper surface and also the sides. At the junction of the handle with the body of the jug the object flares to a width of 38.6mm (from 17.3mm). Around the junction, and in patches elsewhere, are splashes of a mid-green yellow glaze. The handle has been slightly twisted.

One rim and two body sherds with varying quantities of chalk and flint inclusions. In Winchester this fabric was used in the late Saxon period but the fabric is used elsewhere, for example Hamwic, from an earlier date (Helen Rees pers. comm. October 2009). The rim itself is very subtle. All three sherds have grey cores; two have oxidised orange surfaces. One piece is far smaller and thinner; the three have a combined weight of 20.0g.
