Fragment from the side wall of a decorated Samian small bowl of Roman date, probably 50-180AD. The sherd does not contain either the rim or base, although is heavily curved, probably similar in shape to Form 37, a hemispherical bowl (cf CBA guide pp47-48). There is no evidence of a median band of mouldings (olovo). The outer face is decorated with a standing figure of a naked woman, probably Venus or similar, bordered by a vine leaf scroll. The fabric is a mid orange buff colour, whilst the outer glaze is a mid orange red. The glaze has been abraded from many surfaces and the fabric i…

Large cast lead-alloy repair piece, still attached to a small piece of Samian ware, dating from the Roman period, c. AD43-410. Lead repairs for Samian dishes were not uncommon in Roman times. Samian dishes were imported from e.g. Gaul and, though not irreplaceable, were certainly precious enough to be repaired rather than thrown away. Some lead staples are small and unobtrusive, but this one was very chunky and may have tried to hold together two larger sherds or part of a larger vessel.

?Rim sherd of a Roman coarseware vessel. The rim projects 6mm and appears to have had a lip on the inside surface which is now worn. The angle between the rim and body is c.135 degrees. The fabric is orange with micaceous inclusions. On the inside surface are a number of abraded holes, which probably originally held larger inclusions that are now missing. The sherd measures 38x23x5mm and weighs 5.32g.
