Fragment of a pottery roof ridge tile with grooved decoration in a 'herring bone' pattern or 'fir tree' motif on either side of the crest and running from the top of the ridge towards the base of the tile, which is missing. The fabric includes small white inclusions of feldspar and slivers of gray shale and fragments of mica, which suggest that it is made of Lostwithiel-type ware. This type of tile has been found at sites like Tintagel where it can be dated to a certain building stage in the castle's history during the 13th century (Tintagel catalogue No.1 - Box 23 - unpublish…

Two fragments of a Medieval floor tile. The tiles were made by hand and are of the type known as inlaid or encaustic, referring to the decoration. The tiles were first stamped to leave an impression and then filled with a contrasting coloured liquid clay, white or off-white in both cases. Once dry the any excess clay removed to reveal the design. The tiles were then covered with a glaze material and fired. Such tiles are usually only found in buildings of relatively high status. For comparisons check Elizabeth Eames volume on English Medieval Tiles. Large Fragment: L. 93mm. …

Unglazed fragment of a floor tile of medieval date (1250-1450). The fragment is irregular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. It measures 73mm in length, 50mm width and is 17.3mm thick. It weighs 62.81 grams. The fabric of the tile is relatively hard with a number of angular and sub-angular quartz, grit, and iron stone inclusions. The fabric colour is two-tone, the outer a mid orange and the inner (core) a mid grey. This two-tone effect has been caused by low temperatures within the kiln and is typical of medieval pottery. The upper surface of the tile has been decorated with…

The tile is incomplete. The fabric of the tile is quite a fine grained ceramic which has an orange surface with a grey core. The lower surface appears to be the original surface - it is quite shiny and smooth in place. The other surface is decorated an incised pattern, possibly depicting heraldry. The surface has a white slip which has then been covered with a yellow glaze. Where the decoration has been incised, the glaze is more thick, forming a green colour. The tile appears to be too narrow in depth (12.1mm) for a floor tile, but for a wall tile you would expect to see a white…
