Iron probable tuyere with copper alloy melt adhering. A cast round-section oval iron object with a central round longitudinal aperture of diameter 15.5mm. The object is shaped like a large lentoid bead at its open end and is possibly narrowed from its midpoint with a circumferential groove. Associated with a group of copper alloy metalworking waste. The blocked end bears parallel grooves in a limited zone. The object was kindly viewed by Dr James Dilley, Experimental Archaeologist at the University of Southampton, who considers that a late date is implied by this detail. This conc…

A corroded Medieval or Post-Medieval iron whittle-tang knife blade with an incomplete tang. The back is flat, and the former cutting edge tends to taper gently and generally in a straight line, disregarding several irregular serrations, from the hilt to about 4 millimetres before the extant tip. From there it tapers more steeply and convexly to meet the back edge. The serrations seem to be a consequence of corrosion and fragmentation rather than an intentional feature. The tang is broadly rectangular in cross-section and projects from the blade close to the back edge. It tapers in wi…

A fragment of iron wedge riveted mail armour, dating from the 15th- early 16th century. Most of rings retain their mobility and have not corroded together, The fragment consists of 21 rings. While wedge riveting is predominant from the later 15th century, the ring size and quality would suggest a 16th century date for this fragment. Dimensions: length: 98.50mm; width: 15.12mm; thickness: 3.36mm; weight: 11.23g Other examples of mail armour on the database are LON-72FE79, LON-664EA2, PUBLIC-5F69C7 and SUR-F11D27.

The shoe is slightly convex, with an asymmetrical web of 40mm maximum width and appears heavily worn at the front, largely on the right side. The shoe lacks calkins or a toe clip and there is no evidence of fullering. The degree of corrosion makes the nailhole count difficult to determine.

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probable corroded piece of cast iron shot from the Post Medieval period, dating from around AD 1500 -1800. It is a corroded spherical solid shot. The small size of about 1.25 inch diameter, and low mass of 0.19 lb suggests use in a small cannon or hand gun such as a Serpentine. See https://finds.org.uk/counties/findsrecordingguides/shot/ which notes that iron balls may also have an industrial function in milling and crushing, so this object may not be a cannon ball. The ball is 31.8mm in diameter and weighs 90.15g.

It has an arched shaped centre with roughly vertical sides, and the arch is not pointed, which indicates a sixteenth century date. The outside is a more rounded shape. It is not possible to tell if calkins are present, but possibly not. In spite of the heavy corrosion two or three square holes are visible around the perimeter.  Similar to the Dove show shown on page 15 of  Sparkes' Shire Guide to Horseshoes. Iron possible heckle comb tooth. Tapered cast square-section shank, lightly curved. The material was identified by testing with a magnet. A wooden comb handle mounted with rows of teeth would be used to separate the fibres of flax or hemp, or to card wool. The good condition and regular curvature of this object prompts an identification other than as a nail fragment. It may arise from the use of a high quality steel to make comb teeth. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800 Length: 30.7mm, Width: 3.9mm, Thickness: 3.2mm, Weight: 1.39gms

A cast iron cannon ball, which, judging from the size and weight, was probably for use in a Falconet or similar small artillery weapon, dating from about AD 1500-1900. A Falconet was a small cannon used both on land and in light naval vessels. A number were used during the English Civil War (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falconet_(cannon). The findspot could suggest a connection to the Battle of Wakefield in 1643. The iron ball is spherical and corroded. It is 64mm diameter and 1020g (2lb, 4oz). Iron balls were also used in various industrial milling operations, such as …
