Object type: END SCRAPER
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete Neolithic flint end scraper dating to c. 4000-2400 BC. The scraper is produced from a hard hammer struck secondary flake. The flint is dark grey in colour with some buff coloured cortex remaining. The sub-circular distal end has abrupt and semi-abrupt retouch used to produce a working edge. The dorsal side has a large negative scar resulting in a depression where the thumb would be placed which would allow the user to exert more pressure when in use.  Length: 66.09mm; width: 40.38mm; thickness: 18.97mm and weight: 35.9…

A large dark grey flint pebble, possibly a hammer stone of  Mesolithic to Bronze Age date c.8300-800 BC. The object is a large sub-circular dark grey flint pebble. There is extensive battering over the majority of the surface consisting of percussion marks and fine flake removals. There are two small areas of pale light brown cortex remaining.  Diameter: 66.43mm and weight: 326.08g.  Dating of this hammer stone is suggested from the finder by association of a reworked Mesolithic Adze and other flint…

A probable flint fabricator or rod probably dating from the early Mesolithic to late bronze-age period. Description: The fabricator is an elongated rectangle in shape and triangular in cross-section. It is made on a secondary flake with a small area of pale brown cortex at the distal end. The dorsal side bears the scars of the removal of two earlier longitudinal flakes. The bulb of percussion has been removed by retouch but there are conchoidal ripples along the full length of the ventral face. There is invasive, scaled semi-abrupt flake removal scar…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Late Neolithic/early Bronze Age c.3000 - c.1500 BC 'thumbnail' scraper. Although scrapers are fairly ubiquitous, the retouch looks invasive and penetrates deeply into the body of the scraper. The scraper has retouch on c.75% of its circular shape and brown is a molted grey and white colour. The base of the scraper is relatively flat with slight ripples indicative of a soft hammered flake. A strike platform is vistable.  Length: 15.07mm, Width: 16.42mm, Thickness at its thickest point: 4mm. Weight: 1.24g.

A complete Neolithic/ early Bronze Age sub-pyramidal single stricking platform core, dating c3300-1800 BC. Long narrow and broad flakes have been removed by probably unidirectional working from the broad flat striking platform. One side has the cortex remaining. The formation of patina had begun, producing a pale grey surface with a few spots of iron staining on most sides.  It has been battered along its edges, leaving a series of edge-on impact chips to reveal the underlying tint of dark grey flint.  Measurements: 39.32mm long; 41.6…

An incomplete late Neolithic polished and flaked axehead dating c.3300-2200 BC. Only the butt end survives. The axe appears to have been reworked with most of the polishing surface removed, the grinding and polishing is restricted to the lateral edges (rounded) and to the high points of the flake scars. The axehead is worked from a dark and pale grey patinated flint with a few spots of iron staining to both faces, the cutting edge has broken in antiquity and an attempt at reshaping the edge has been roughly knapped at the break. A small portion of the cortex r…

Bifacially struck flint tool, probably abandoned before completion. Struck on a lingulate-shaped secondary flint with a strip of cortex remaining down the length of the dorsal face. There are multiple lateral strikes on both faces but only the dorsal face has been struck with removals at the distal end. Several of the lateral strikes on the ventral face have terminated prematurely in hinge and step fractures which in all likelihood made the intended tool unrecoverable. Probably intended to be a knife. Most likely Neolithic in date.  Length 95mm, width 29m…
