A medieval rim sherd. The colour of the sherd is inconsistent: the salmon inner surface is the most uniform in colour, and the margins are mostly grey save for the top of the rim which is also salmon-coloured. The outer surface has areas of salmon as well as grey, but also features two distinct areas of green glaze which retains its sheen. The fabric is largely abraded and contains abundant grey inclusions as well as quartz. Mica inclusions are more sparsely visible. On the inner surface towards the top of the rim and the margin there is a significant void of 6.1mm in length.…

A sherd from a vessel dating to the medieval period. The fabric is predominantly grey in colour except for the inner surface which is salmon-coloured, and for some areas of the core and margins where there are sections of brown. The texture is grainy, particularly on the inner surface where there are abundant inclusions visible, mostly grey in colour, the largest of which is 1.5mm in length though the majority are much smaller. There are moderate mica inclusions throughout the fabric, and on the outer surface there are some quartz inclusions visible. There remains a layer of green…

A body sherd of a medieval vessel. The predominant colour of the fabric is grey. There are abundant mica inclusions as well as abundant small white inclusions. The inclusions are mostly visible on the inner surface and at the breaks, for the outer surface is mostly covered in a glaze which has a green patina, with moderate spots of black. Where the glaze remains the texture is quite smooth, and becomes rougher on the inner surface.

A base sherd likely from a Roman mortarium. The main colour is cream/white, which alters at one of the breaks to beige/pink at the core, and the texture is chalky. The outer surface appears dappled with brown. There appears to be moderate inclusions of mica. The most prominent inclusions are dark brown and grey and mostly angular, with some that appear darker and shinier. They are abundant on the inner surface and they range in size but the largest is 3.7mm in length, and many others are close to this scale. There are also several voids on the inner surface, wi…

Concrete is attached to both faces and 120mm of one edge, from which it overhangs by about 31mm. The concrete on one face retains most of the surface where it attached to the next tile, and finishes with a straight edge 90mm from the complete short edge of the tile. The thickness of the concrete on this face increases evenly from 45mm to 50mm. There are&…

A post medieval sherd of triangular form, that would likely have formed part of a butter pot due to its curvature. An example of sandy coarse earthenware, the sherd has a red body which is mostly uniform in colour save for areas of grey on the inner and outer surfaces, possibly due to over-firing. The fabric is abraded and the inclusions are mostly quartz, with very rare white grains. A larger grain of quartz is visible on the outer surface of around 0.9mm in length.

A sherd of a Post-Medieval wheel thrown ceramic vessel, possibly an example of yellow ware (dating 1550-1600). The outer surface is unglazed and pink-toned, with a coarse texture. The inner surface has a yellow-coloured glaze and various brown spots are visible. The fabric is abraded and has quartz inclusions. The sherd seems to have formed part of a base, perhaps of a large bowl, as the outer surface curves upwards from a flat segment.

An incomplete Post Medieval ceramic Raeren stoneware shoe/boot dating from AD 1500-1550. The remaining shoe consists of part of the lower leg, ankle and heel part of the shoe, the toe is now missing. The shoe is decorated with a series of stamped dots which represent stitching. The shoe has a grey fabric and glossy grey glaze on both the interior and exterior. A very similar shoe can be seen in Hurst et al (1986:207 fig. 100.323) found at Alkmaar, Netherlands which had a moulded face on the toe area, it is probable that this shoe had the same decoration. The Alkmaar example has a wide…
