A heavily corroded iron object of unidentified form and function. Description: The object is a long iron implement. The top third of the object is a quadrilateral cuboid of around 12.67mm in width, whilst the lower two thirds is cylindrical tapering to a poorly defined point. The object is heavily corroded resulting in bulbous protrusions and concretions (one of which has a piece of flint in). This has warped the orignal form of the object and obsured its function. Measurements: Length: 85.54mm; Width: 5.21 - 12.67mm and Weight: 23.84g. Discussion: It is difficul…

Iron unidentified object fragment. A cast concavo-convex conical object, with an indication of a square feature, perhaps lost from this site, and with a conical hollow 23mm deepwithin. Chipped at top and bottom. The finder kindly notes this comes from an area of Roman finds. However, Dr Kevin Leahy considers almost all cast iron objects are likely to date to the later medieval or early post-medieval periods at the earliest. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1900 Diameter: 43.2mm, Height: 37mm, Weight: 156.12gms

A complete Iron latchlifter dating from the Iron Age to the Early Medieval period, c. 100 BC - AD 800. Wrought iron stem with a projecting suspension hook at one end, and a plain bit formed by a projecting bar at a right-angle to the stem. The ferrous material is very corroded and damaged. The iron has a brown patina. The latchlifter is 126.16mm in length, 29.66mm at its widest with a stem diameter of 6.58mm. It weighs 17.69g. The bit is not of a complex form for use with a barrel padlock, so a use as a latch-lifter is suggested. The term ‘latchli…

Iron axehead. A wrought iron axehead with a [now] oval blade with a curved cutting edge, and a flat sub-rectangular back. The iron has been sharply folded three times to achieve the form for the haft which a sub-rectangular hole. The denuded state of the metal may point to a date earlier in the assigned period, although it is accpeted that the heavy weight suggests otherwise. The forms of many hand tools are frequently non-diagnostic, the technology of their manufacture and use remaining unchanged throughout history. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete Post Medieval cast iron shot dating from around AD 1700-1850. It is sub-spherical, solid and is pitted from corrosion. This size shot could have been fired as a single shot from a rabinet or Serpentine cannon, or from a larger weapon as part of grape or canister shot (see Civil War Artillery for gun and shot sizes). It has a diameter of 27.2mm (about 1 inch) and weighs 71.04g. Iron balls were also used  as ball bearings and in industrial processes, so cannot be certainly identified as shot.

Complete iron horseshoe of modern date (c. AD 1850-1920). With a broadly oval plan and break at its rear end, this horseshoe has a protruding toe-clip at the front and two symmetrical caulkins (downward facing projections) at the rear. Because of universal corrosion no nails or nail holes are visible. The horseshoe has a broadly irregular plan, suggesting that it was handmade. The large size suggests it was worn by a large draught horse. Toe-clips were routinely added to horseshoes after 1850 to add stability to the hoof in the shoe, while caulkins have been a feature of hor…

Iron and copper alloy metalworking debris. A compact oval cake made up of three discrete layers or components. The earliest appears to comprise fragments of copper alloy which has congealed on a flat smooth surface leaving a glossy surface to the object. A maximum thickness of 7mm might be inferred for this part. The massiest largest central part is a metallic ferrous cake [giving a strong magnetic response] with an intermittently vesicular appearance, of thickness 45mm. An upper layer is a splash of off-white ashy vesicular skim [compare NLM-87C967 and NLM-882816 which …
