A large Post-Medieval to Modern iron key, dating from c. AD 1600-1900. The bow is kidney-shaped, with the stem projecting into the bow. The stem is corroded, but is essentially sub-circular in cross-section and becomes smaller in diameter at the point where the bit is attached. The bit consists of two wands that are roughly symmetrical in shape: each has one cleft on one (the outer) side and two clefts on the other (inner) side. The stem then extends for 12mm beyond the bit. The surface of the key is rough and mostly a reddish orange colour, with multiple white patches.…

A corroded iron slide key, similar to Manning (1985) Type 2 of Roman date The key handle is solid and rectangular in cross-section. At one end is a large circular perforation intended as a suspension loop. The bit of the key projects in the same plane as the bow and it is missing its teeth.  The key measures 67.07 mm in total length. The handle has a width of 26.54 mm and a thickness of 6.64 mm. The shank of the key projects into the bow with two triangular projections and a notch in the centre. This is full of iron staining. The stem is solid, and broadly hexagonal in cross section and swells slightly in size immediately before the bit. The stem projects beyond the bit. The bow is openwork and comprises a pair of circular openings with a rearward projecting rectangular terminal at the centre, which has small flanking ridges and a flat ridged bar at the end. An incomplete Post Medieval cast iron rotary key, c.AD 1600-1800. This item comprises of a solid shank, broken off before reaching the bow of the key. It is rounded in cross-section and leads to a moulded collar; above the collar, the bit has been divided into two wards, although the exact shape of the split is unclear. The shank extends beyond the bit by 5mm. The general condition is very poor, with all surfaces heavily corroded and rusted.

The bow has an ovate section with a worn break to one point. A circular sectioned bow extends from one point of the bow, terminating in a flat tip. A complete iron key dating to the Post Medieval period (c. AD 1600-1800). The key has a solid, square bit with a notch on the inner edge. The shank is sub-circular in section leading to a D-shaped bow. The object is heavily corroded tbus obscuring further detail. Comparable examples recorded on the PAS database include: BERK-DA4231, SWYOR-E75BF2 and SWYOR-90A491.  The overall dimensions are as follows: 138.78mm in length, 57.14mm in width, 15.50mm in thickness and 124.32g in weight.
