A Roman (AD 50-150) copper-alloy Colchester derivative brooch ('Dolphin' type) with spring mechanism. The pin is of a different copper alloy (rather greyer, smoother and shinier) than the body of the brooch (mid-greenish grey, rough to touch, lightly pitted). The wings are C-shaped in cross-section and span 18.8mm. To the front they are decorated with a single transverse groove at either end. To the reverse is a double-pierced lug for the axis bar and spring cord. The spring has 9 coils, the tenth extending into the pin; there is a break in one end coil where it extends into the cord.…

Copper alloy mount. Cast U-profile concavo-convex anthropomorphic mount, perhaps from the edge of an object such as a shield board or scabbard. The display face bears the image of a face or mask with prominently arched brows, hollows to either side of a central nasal ridge as eyes, and with a luxuriant horizontal moustache; the forehead and chin, the latter perhaps bearded, are formed by the upper and lower edges of the object. White material adhering to the hollow back is presumably a fixative. The early medieval use of human portraits was limited, and is thought to have often alluded…

Copper alloy harness pendant. Cast heater shield-shaped plate with an oval suspension loop at right angles to its display plane. The shield is charged with a lion rampant left against an enamelled field of an indeterminate tint, either black [sable] or dark blue [azure]; the tail of the lion may be forked. The colour of the lion, which was presumably a metal [i.e. silver/argent or gold/or] is uncertain.
